This has become one of my favorite apps. I can’t believe how many years I tolerated the frustration of trying to Google nutrition information for different food products. This takes time and often is not successful because it can be difficult to find the official website for the product, and once you do, they want to tell you all the “benefits” of the product (great tasting, may reduce risk of heart disease, no trans fats, etc), and maybe their nutrition fact chart, but they don’t make it easy to find the actual data on what ingredients are in the product. As someone with IBS, you are not just looking for a nutrition fact label, but you want to see the ingredient list of a product to know what it actually contains. It’s not enough to know it has sugar – what type of sugar? What is is sourced from? These are details that can make all the difference for you. Shopwell has become my favorite food ingredient app for helping patients with IBS.
When I first discovered Shopwell, I felt as if a dream had come true. This is a one stop shop where you can search many brands of food products, including the more naturally-focused brands you’ll find at the health food store, and easily pull up their ingredient lists, and additional information such as whether or not the product is gluten free, Kosher, made from organic ingredients, high in fiber, etc. Shopwell also allows you to set up a profile indicating your personalized needs (do you want to be heart healthy? Are you gluten free? And others), and it then uses a scoring system to rate foods from 0-100 as to how well they match your specific health needs. The Shopwell food ingredient app also contains a grocery list feature. The app also allows you to scan a food item in the grocery store with your phone, and it will tell you if the item is appropriate for your dietary needs based on the profile you set up.
