IBgard is an over the counter medical food that helps relieve the symptoms or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). One of the things I love about IBgard is that you can access from anywhere at CVS or Walgreens. While I’m not a fan of just taking something to treat symptoms without doing anything to treat the cause, sometimes you need a little help from medication and/or supplements to reduce symptoms while we are working on addressing root causes and promoting healing. In addition, even once you have identified food triggers, and are feeling well while avoiding them, you may on occasion experience an accidental exposure to a reactive food. When this happens, you may need something to help relieve the symptoms associated with the resulting food reaction. Because IBgard is available at CVS and Walgreens, you can pick it up anywhere you may be for quick relief.
Another thing I love about IBgard is that it’s not a medication. It’s just peppermint oil, which has been shown to be effective at reducing spasms and cramping and significantly reducing bloating in people with IBS. The peppermint oil in IBgard is enteric-coated so it is delivered to the small intestine before the peppermint oil is released, since that is where it will be the most effective. (Please keep in mind that peppermint oil that is not enteric coated is of limited effectiveness in reducing symptoms and can actually cause heartburn or nausea.)
I don’t love that IBgard contains polysorbate 80 (a preservative), FD&C Yellow #5, and FD&C Green #3, as I find that some patients are sensitive to these chemicals when we test for food sensitivities. However for patients who are not sensitive to these chemicals, the benefit of taking this supplement to treat occasional symptoms outweighs the downside of consuming these additives. Also, I find that in small amounts on a very occasional basis, there is likely not enough of these additives in IBgard to contribute to any adverse effects.
IBgard costs $29.99 for 48 capsules. The recommended dosage is 1-2 capsules as needed up to 3 times per day.
So don’t wait! Go get some IBGard and keep it on hand for those rough days.
