Emily’s Story
Emily came to me frustrated with worsening digestive issues, suffering from constipation and bloating despite her healthy diet. She had been diligently taking prebiotic supplements and eating foods like onions and garlic to support her gut health, but instead of feeling better, her symptoms of bloating and irregularity were getting worse.
After doing a functional GI workup including a lactulose breath test and comprehensive digestive stool analysis (both tests even GI doctors don’t usually perform), we discovered that Emily had results consistent with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). This explained why she couldn’t tolerate the prebiotic foods she was consuming—they were actually exacerbating her symptoms due to the bacterial imbalance in her gut.
To help Emily, I started her on a therapeutic diet to calm her digestive symptoms while we worked on naturally clearing the SIBO using targeted herbal therapies. We focused on foods that were gentle on her gut, avoiding high-FODMAP and fermentable options initially.
Even in the beginning stages when her bacterial overgrowth was still significant, we were able to support her microbiome by carefully and strategically introducing gut-friendly foods like cooked and cooled rice, potatoes, and small portions of a diverse range of low-FODMAP plant-based foods. Once her bacterial overgrowth was cleared, Emily was delighted to find that she could tolerate more and more high-prebiotic foods, including those high in FODMAPs. This made it significantly easier for her to effectively nourish her gut bacteria with a diverse range of prebiotic-rich foods, as she was able to return to eating a varied diet.

These symptoms occur because prebiotics are fermentable fibers that can increase gas production in the gut.
